Duke Kahanamoku was born August 24, 1890 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the first of nine siblings.  He is best known as the “Father of modern Surfing” and winner of five Olympic swimming medals.  He was the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame and the Surfing Hall of Fame.  Also, he is a member of the US Olympic Hall of Fame.

In the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Kahanamoku won the gold medal in the 100m freestyle and the silver in the 4×200m relay. World War I canceled the 1916 Olympics, but during the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, he won gold medals in both the 100m freestyle and the 4×200m relay. He won his last medal in the 100m freestyle, finishing second in the 1924 Paris Olympics.

Kahanamoku travelled around the globe, delighting crowds with swimming and surfing exhibitions.  Many people believe that these exhibitions were the main cause for increased popularity with modern surfing.

Hawaii Click It or Ticket Campaign

May 27th, 2009 kNuke

I wear my seat belt every time I get into the front seat of a car; I figure that’s what it’s for.  Do we really need to spend resources reinforcing this?  I understand the campaign is targeted at young drivers, but shouldn’t they learn to wear a seat belt in Driver’s Education?

If a driver doesn’t want to wear a seat belt, I’m fine with that, it’s their choice.  If they are in an accident, it only causes harm to them.  If they’re willing to take that risk, that should a choice up to the driver.

Hell, people smoke, get lung cancer, give others lung cancer, and burden the Health system, which causes pain to the entire island.  Maybe Hawaii should start a Quit It or Ticket Campaign for Smokers?  Sounds pretty ridiculous huh?  Exactly…

First Quarter Fantasy Baseball Awards

May 18th, 2009 kNuke

We’ve pretty much closed the book on the first quarter of this year’s baseball season so I’ll hand out my First Quarter Fantasy Baseball Awards.

MVP: Raul Ibanez and Aaron Hill.  Ibanez is tearing it up right now batting .357 with 13 HR and 35 RBI while Hill ain’t too shabby either batting .345 with 11 HR and 34 RBI; Both Classic Sell High candidates.

Cy Young: Zack Greinke.  He’s got 65 Ks in 60 IP to go along with 7 W, 0.60 ERA, and 0.83 WHIP.  Since he is a high K guy, I would hang on for the ride.

Best “Everyone” Pick: Adam Jones. Just as good as advertised with a with a surprising .370 AVG.

Worst “Everyone” Pick: Alexei Ramirez.  Eek…

Biggest Bust: Jimmy Rollins. If you own him, you might as well go down with the ship.

Best Waiver Wire Pickup: Jason Bartlett and Brandon Inge.  Bartlett is giving owners a little bit of everthing and Inge has Catcher eligibility.

Oldie, but Goodie: Johnny Damon.  Batting .322 with 10 HR and 27 RBI.  Kudos to you for drafting him.

Nice to Know You: David Ortiz.  Sad to say, but Big Papi’s fantasy career is over.

Where Are You: Matt Wieters and David Price.  Both have yet to log an inning this season.

Category Star: Carl Crawford.  With his 24 SB, it’s possible he’ll put your team in the Top 3 for the category by himself.

Recount: Wandy Rodriguez, Jered Weaver, Ramon Ramirez, Edwin Jackson, Randy Wolf, Orlando Hudson, Marco Scutaro, Russell Branyan, Asdrubal Cabrera, Nick Johnson, Ryan Theriot, and Kendry Morales.  Yeah, go check their stats again.

Best Guy Still Available: Andrew Bailey.  He might not be the official closer in Oakland, but he’s worth the speculative add.

There you have it, my First Quarter Fantasy Baseball Award Winners.  Let me know if I missed any of your guys.

More Right Knee Soreness

May 11th, 2009 kNuke

Every once in a while, my right knee becomes pretty sore; it’s a dull pain that persists for up to a couple days. Even when I’m sitting around watching TV, I feel pain regardless of the way my leg is positioned. I still can’t pinpoint what activities cause the pain, but I thought I’d note it for future reference.

Discomfort Behind Outside of Knee

April 27th, 2009 kNuke

I haven’t really gone full blast with my hamstring workouts since the ACL surgery, but my knee had been feeling pretty good for a while so i decided it was time to take the training wheels off. Over the course of a week I did Deadlifts and Hamstring Curls without any issues, but when I tried to do Glute-Ham Raises, I felt some discomfort.

Over the next three days I had a lingering discomfort behind the outside of surgically repaired knee. I took it easy for a of couple days, but did some wind sprints on the third day. Currently my knee feels fine. Hopefully, this was just a bump in the road. I’m a little hesitant to go full blast again, but I’m going to test it out anyway, because my knee is supposed to be 100%. I’m wondering if this discomfort was because of the knee surgery or just a freak occurrence?

Tuna Burger

April 24th, 2009 kNuke

Here’s the latest recipe I’m using to spice up my tuna. It sure beats Mustard Tuna.

3 cans Tuna in water
1/4 cup Flax meal
4 Green onions, chopped
2 tbsp Mustard seeds
2 Eggs
1 tbsp Cilantro
2 cloves Garlic, chopped
1 tsp Shoyu
1 bam Salt
1 bam Pepper

You throw all the ingredients in a bowl, mix it up, and make two burgers. Put about 2 tsp of Olive oil in a large pan and turn the stove to Medium heat. Chuck both burgers in the pan and cook it up until both sides are browned; it usually takes about 4-6 minutes per side.

You can put the burger on a bun, but I just eat it as is. My first try at making the burgers came out pretty decent. Thumbs Up!

2009 NFL Draft Thoughts

April 22nd, 2009 kNuke

I’m no Mel Kiper Jr or Todd McShay, but here are my 10 Thoughts on the 2009 NFL Draft.

  1. I’m not sold on Matthew Stafford as the #1 Overall selection.  Young Quarterback, bad team, #1 Overall selection…  Smells like a bust.
  2. This will be an Offensive Tackle heavy draft with 5 or 6 coming off the board in the First Round.  Who wants to bet on the Over/Under Bust?  I’m setting the Line at 2.
  3. Aaron Curry is a talent, but he’s not a pass rusher.
  4. Josh Freeman is not worth a #1.
  5. All teams that don’t need a QB, shouldn’t draft one #1.  I’m looking at you Jacksonville and Washington.
  6. Percy Harvin is the second coming of Peter Warrick.
  7. Remember Rhett Bomar?  NFL teams do…  He’s the Second Day steal.
  8. Biggest draft winner, New England Patriots.  They essentially got a late #1 for a backup QB who won’t be starting after Week 7.
  9. Biggest draft loser, Sam Bradford.  For his sake, I hope he doesn’t get hurt.
  10. Biggest fantasy impact, Brandon Pettigrew.

NFL Draft Weekend is always a lot of fun.  Get your popcorn ready!

Hawaii Men’s Volleyball Shut Down

April 19th, 2009 kNuke

Now that Mike Wilton is retiring, I think it’s time to shut down the Men’s Volleyball program at the University of Hawaii.  This is not something to be taken lightly, but it makes sense from what I can tell.

  1. There aren’t that many schools playing Men’s Volleyball anymore.
  2. Cutting a Men’s sport will provide flexibility with Title IX.
  3. I’m assuming getting rid of Men’s Volleyball would help the Athletic Department budget.

Anytime a sport is cut, it’s a very emotional issue.  Someone will have to do the due diligence to make sure all the details are hashed out.  Once that is done, I think cutting Men’s Volleyball will make sense.

Thumbs Down to Men’s Volleyball?

2009 NBA Playoffs

April 18th, 2009 kNuke

The NBA Playoffs started today; everyone and their mom has the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals.  When everyone is saying the same thing, I tend to think that it won’t work out that way.  I have to admit that the Lakers and Cavaliers both look like the clear favorites, but I think one will stumble on their way to the Finals.

My alternate selections are the Orlando Magic and the San Antonio Spurs.  I’m really pulling for LeBron James, but my Finals prediction has the Magic and Lakers.

Ashley Nagaoka

April 13th, 2009 kNuke

Ashley Nagaoka

Ashley Nagaoka is the newest addition to the KGMB9 News team.  KGMB9 is currently #3 in the cute women reporters rankings, but Nagaoka is a nice addition alongside Malika Dudley.

KHON2 still holds the top spot with Olena Rubin, Trini Kaopuiki, and Marisa Yamane.  KHNL comes in at #2 with Stephanie Lum and Mari-Ela David.

Below is a picture of Malika Dudley (third on the right) and Ashley Nagaoka (far right).
