Basketball T-Shirt Undershirts

Who started this T-Shirt undershirt trend? I see it everywhere in College Basketball. I heard that players wear the undershirt, because the arena is cold. Wearing a cutoff undershirt looks fine, but a T-Shirt undershirt just doesn’t look right.

Can someone fill me in?
