Feeling my Hamstrings and Quads

January 22nd, 2009 kNuke Posted in ACL Surgery Adventure | 4 Comments »

Now that I’m starting to play full force I can really feel my hamstrings and quads.  Everytime I try to run full speed they start to tighten up and it almost feels like they’re going to cramp!  I can’t wait to start working out my hamstrings and quads with some weights.

While pitching yesterday I had to cover first base on a squibbler down the first base line.  I have to say that I was pretty afraid of running into the runner!  I know I wanted to try playing in the field and running the bases this season, but that may be a little premature.  We still have about 9 games to play in the regular season, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to get over that mental hump.

Good news is that I pitched 3 innings and I don’t feel that bad this morning.  My left knee is a little more stiff than usual, but nothing that I’d really worry about.  I had a little knot in my trap during the game; I feel that area today more than anything else.

Final line: 3 IP, 1 ER, 1 K, 5 BB

  3. kNuke –
For a while I could not get your blog to come up, so I’m glad to find that you are still here. When I saw my surgeon back before Christmas, he felt he is probably going to have reoperate on the knee and cut away that torn meniscus. I bought a little reprieve time, so will see him again mid February.

This is so great you are able to get into baseball and are doing okay with it – but skydiving? Seriously dude? LOL.

Yes – I also found I have started having a little trouble with the “good” knee due to compensation. It sure doesn’t feel like you are compensating though. The good knee just starts to get sore. I have been able to get back into BodyCombat class to get a decent workout and the knee seems to tolerate it better and recover quicker each time. I am finally focusing on the diet and getting in some cardio workouts to start dropping the pounds that came on during the 6-months of rehab.

I have a little trouble with the knee cap clicking and hurting – especially if I try to go upstairs with the leg. This may be another reason the surgeon wants to back into the knee. Have you experienced this? I still cannot fully squat down or kneel on the knee. Getting up and down off the floor makes me feel like I’m 80. But I can hit the treadmill to do a little soft jog, and I’m still doing resistance training to rebuild those muscles. The quads and hamstrings are significantly weaker still than the good leg.

    Good work with the baseball!

  4. Sometimes my blog takes a while to load… Sorry about that.

My knee clicks as well, but it did that before the injury. I was told I have loose joints and the clicking is okay as it’s just air between the joints. I can’t go into a full squat, but I can kneel on the knee. In certain positions it still hurts though.

I felt that dropping some added flab was a good way to get back into normal condition. That way I felt I’d be less prone to injury.

Hopefully you won’t have to operate again as that will slow down your recovery process, but if the meniscus is damaged, it may be a good idea to get that out of the way now.
